The new date for the Olympic Games has been set

The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics will take place exactly one year later than planned, in the summer of 2021. Swiss Olympic is satisfied, the replacement date could be found so quickly.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Organizing Committee and the authorities of Japan and Tokyo have agreed on a new date for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics: These are now to take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021 - and therefore exactly one Year later than planned. On March 24, 2020, the IOC was forced to postpone the games due to the global corona pandemic (LACRUX reported).

Despite the challenge of an extensive international competition calendar, the IOC and the organizers, together with the international sports associations, were able to quickly set a new date.

Ralph Stöckli, Chef de Mission of Swiss Olympic, is satisfied with the new starting position. «We are pleased that a postponement date could be found so quickly. It was a complex task that required everyone to be accommodating and willing to compromise. » Stöckli says that after a period of uncertainty, the IOC and the organizers have quickly clarified.

«Now we can all look forward to the summer of 2021. Together with the national associations, we at Swiss Olympic will do everything to ensure that Swiss athletes find the best possible conditions in Tokyo. The work continues! »
