Jakob Schubert wins gold | Combo format bouldering & lead climbing men | European Championship 2022

On the last sport climbing competition day of the 2022 European Championships in Munich, Austria's Jakob Schubert won the gold medal in the combined competition format.

On all days of the competition, the weather in Munich offered the best conditions for many visitors to the Königsplatz. Just today, on the last day of competition, it started raining here in Munich while the men were fighting for the podium places in the combined format (bouldering, lead climbing).

Adam Ondra in an interview about today

The Czech won in the individual disciplines on the previous days of competition Adam Ondra Gold in lead climbing and bronze in bouldering. Today he continued on his successful course and won the first round (bouldering discipline). His cards for a gold medal in the combined format were correspondingly good, and another gold medal was within reach.

But two athletes were hot on his heels. The Frenchman Sam Avezou and the Olympian Jakob Schubert from Austria. Along with Mejdi Schalck they topped all three boulders and were only 0.2 points apart. The Spaniard Alberto Gines Lopez was 19 points behind Adam Ondra and took fifth place.

Battle between Ondra, Schubert and Gines Lopez in the lead final

While the French didn't start much in the final, Adam Ondra, Jakob Schubert and Alberto Gines Lopez a head-to-head race. The Spaniard was the first to climb and secured a medal position with hold 48. He was followed by Jakob Schubert, who was knocked out just before the top, but meanwhile took first place. Only Adam Ondra, who was last up, could dispute the gold medal.

“I wasn't super nervous watching Adam climb because I knew I was going to win at least silver. I was actually 100% sure that I would get silver and that Adam Ondra would climb as far as I did. I was amazed that he then fell before me and didn't climb to the top. That doesn't happen often."
