Urubko's winter expedition on Gasherbrum I ends with a fall into a crevasse and frostbite

Denis Urubko abandons his attempt to climb Gasherbrum I in winter. This after the Russian-Polish alpinist fell into a crevasse and suffered frostbite on his hands.

The well-known alpinist and high-altitude mountaineer Denis Urubko is trying to Gasherbrum I to climb in winter, fell into a crevasse at around 5500 meters. According to the Spanish climbing magazine Desnivel, the extreme mountaineer was rescued from the crevasse by his colleague Hassan Shigri after an hour, but suffered frostbite on his hands.

After falling into the crevasse, Urubko and his team would have had to spend a hard night in the high camp before they could descend to the base camp. The mountaineers are currently on the multi-day journey back to Skardu so that they can receive initial medical help.

During his long mountaineering career, Denis Urubko was able to climb all 14 eight-thousanders without artificial oxygen. Together with Simone Moro he managed to climb Makalu in winter in 2009. In February 2011, he, Cory Richards and Simone Moro reached the summit of Gasherbrum II.
