Hybrid jackets: The alternative to the layering principle

The efficient onion principle is more established in mountaineering than in almost any other sporting activity. But even the most skilful combination of several layers has its weaknesses. During the sweaty ascent, the hard shell jacket creates heat build-up and the airy fleece jacket can withstand neither wind nor precipitation. The solution: A hybrid jacket.

A contribution by Fabian Reichle from Bächli Bergsport

Combining the best of different worlds is the task of one hybrid jacket. The term hybrid is defined by the combination of different materials. Corresponding models are primarily based on the classic softshell jacket - they therefore primarily offer breathable weather protection. However, insulating properties are also essential in order to store heat. An insulating jacket does not come close to the focused properties of an insulating, hard shell or mid-layer jacket, but it offers an ideal compromise to offer protection and comfort in changing weather conditions and, last but not least, to save material in the backpack.

performance versus weight

Hybrid jackets are designed differently depending on the manufacturer, two examples of this are the Eisfeld Hybrid Hooded Jacket from Mammut and the LIM Alpha Hood model from Haglöfs. The former is waterproof, the latter water-repellent. While Mammut focuses on performance in nasty weather, Haglöfs impresses with its minimal weight and pack size. As you can see, not all hybrid jackets are the same.

"The body mapping principle means that every part of the body gets exactly the protection that is needed."

Quality is king

However, what the two models mentioned both have inside: Only the best materials are used - from the Gore-Tex membrane to the Primaloft insulation, the well-known quality is consistently used. Incidentally, the different elements are used according to the body mapping principle: This means that every part of the body is given exactly the protection that it needs.

Two hybrid jackets, two approaches

If you are looking for a practical alternative to the layering principle mentioned for the coming ski touring season and often change layers, especially in early winter when the temperatures are mild, a hybrid jacket is a good choice. The two illuminated models are available from Bächli Bergsport: The Mammut Eisfeld Hybrid Hooded Jacket for men and women Haglof's LIM Alpha Hood for ladies.
