This year is one of the most dramatic World Cup years ever: 2019 is awarded most of the tickets for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and part of the qualifier is over the World Cup points (all info below) here). The athletes from all over the world are therefore at the peak of their performance - and the World Cup placements fiercely contested than ever before!
No wonder big international names are on the starting list of this year's BWC Munich: climbing superstar Adam Ondra (CZE) has announced his arrival, as well as Keita Watabe (JPN), last year's winner Gregor Vezonik (SLO) and Jongwon Chon (KOR). For the ladies, the current leader in the World Cup, Janja Garnbret (SLO), goes to the handles.
The competition weekend in detail
On the two competition days, the athletes have to give their all: on Saturday, the 18. May, it starts for the men early: Already from 8 o'clock in the morning the athletes climb in two groups in succession all five competition boulders. At 17 clock then begins the qualification of the ladies, who also start in two groups.
The rankings depend primarily on the number of successfully climbed boulders. For a corresponding rating, the top handle must be kept. If there is a tie, count the number of zones reached next. A "zone" is a special grip in the boulder, usually at about halfway to reach. If there is a tie, then the attempts needed for all boulder problems that have been successfully solved and then the attempts an athlete needed to reach the zone grip count.
The 20 best men and women are allowed to advance to the next round and climb in the semifinals on Sunday, the 19. May from 12 clock four Boulder each. If you finish in the top six here, you will start in the final from 17 watch (men) or 19: 15 watch (women).

Olympic Qualification: 2019 - the year of the decision
Let's go: this year, most of the tickets for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo will be awarded. The trip to Tokyo leads through the qualifying events. When they take place and how many places are given there, our overview reveals.
The qualifying events
Two men and one woman would like to send the DAV to Japan. In total, 20 ladies and 20 men are allowed to race in Tokyo, with a maximum of two per country. As a host nation, Japan may nominate one person at a time, another ticket awards the IOC. The remaining 18 starting places will be awarded in three competitions.
- A first chance has the DAV squad on 20./21. August at the World Championships Olympic-Combined in the Japanese Hachioji: The first seven climb 2020 in Tokyo. For the World Cup, the participants no longer have to qualify separately. Each nation receives a maximum of five starting positions per discipline and gender.
- The second option is this Olympic qualifying event of 28.11.-1.12.: The best 20 athletes from the calculated overall ranking of all World Cups compete in Toulouse (FRA). The six strongest get their ticket.
- The last chance is waiting 2020: In the five continental championships there is still one place per gender.
