Lauteraarhorn: Two alpinists fatally injured

On Tuesday, a mountain accident occurred on the Lauteraarhorn near Guttannen. Two alpinists were killed in the process. Investigations into the accident have started.

A mountain accident on the Lauteraarhorn (municipality of Guttannen) was reported to the Bern canton police on Tuesday, July 6th, 2021, shortly after 13.35 p.m. A rope team on the descent from the Lauteraarhorn discovered two people who had had an accident on the south face of the mountain and then alerted the rescue workers.

The two mountaineers were able to locate them, but only found the death of the two men on site. The recovery was made difficult by the bad weather conditions. According to current knowledge, the two alpinists had an accident on the descent and fell several hundred meters. The casualties are two Swiss, aged 58 and 60, from the canton of Friborg.

In addition to the mountain specialists from the Bern canton police, rescue workers from Air-Glaciers and several specialists from Alpine Rescue Switzerland were on duty. The Bern canton police have started investigations into the accident under the direction of the Oberland Regional Public Prosecutor's Office.
