Italian alpinist Matteo Bernasconi was killed in an avalanche on Tuesday, May 12, 2020.
Bernasconi, known by most as Berna, was alone on a ski tour and drove in the Malgina Couloir on Pizzo del Diavolo in Veltlin when an avalanche broke and killed the 38-year-old. After an extensive search, Berna was found by rescue units.
Matteo Bernasconi, member of the Ragni di Lecco and mountain guide, was one of the most talented young alpinists on the scene. He made a name for himself particularly with new inspections at Cerro San Lorenzo, Cerro Murallón and Torre Egger in Patagonia. Berna was known as a low-key, funny and reliable rope partner and friend.
Our thoughts are with his wife Marta and daughter Kiki.
