Fatal mountain accident: two alpinists crashed

On Saturday, August 22nd, a fatal mountain accident occurred on the Weisshorn. Two alpinists lost their lives in the process.

In the early morning a mountain guide started with his guest from the Schalijoch bivouac towards Schaligrat. You intend to climb the Weisshorn over the ridge.

After the family members could no longer reach the two climbers in the late morning, they alerted the rescue workers. Subsequently, several search flights were carried out with Air-Zermatt. Later in the afternoon, the rescue workers discovered two lifeless bodies at an altitude of about 3 meters above sea level. The rescue crew could only determine the death of the two alpinists.

According to initial findings, the mountaineers were roped up on their ascent to the summit when, at an altitude of around 4 meters above sea level, they fell about 300 to 400 meters for reasons that are still unknown.

According to the formal identification, the victims are a 57-year-old mountain guide from the canton of Graubünden and a 38-year-old mountain climber who lives in the canton of Bern.
