“I took revenge” – Janja Garnbret about the World Cup in Koper

Last Friday and Saturday the penultimate IFSC World Cup of the season took place in Koper, Slovenia. Garnbret was the only athlete to top the final route and win gold. In the men's category, it was the young talent Sorato Anraku who stood at the top of the podium.

That's what's in this article

With her victory on Saturday, Garnbret remained true to her goal of winning gold at every World Cup this season. She also won gold in the bouldering discipline and in the combined format at the World Championships in Bern. Ai Mori only snatched the gold medal from her in the individual lead discipline.

«I finally got my revenge here in Koper. I really enjoyed the climbing, from qualifying to the final. I'm happy that I finally won my first gold medal in Koper."

Janja Garnbret

The Slovenian, who is used to success, has so far missed the gold medal in front of the home crowd. Last year Ai Mori snatched the gold medal from under her nose.

Unstoppable: Sorato Anraku

Nobody has ever had a steeper career than the young Japanese Sorato Anraku. The 16-year-old is bouldering world champion in 2023 and won gold in Innsbruck. He won his first gold medal in lead climbing in Briançon – and now doubles it in Koper.

“I was incredibly nervous before starting the route and tried to suppress my nervousness as much as possible and concentrate on climbing.”

Sonrato Anraku

Anraku's plan worked, with a top finish in the final he climbed away from his competitors and straight onto the top spot on the podium. The American Jesse Grupper climbed to second place, followed by the Olympic champion Alberto Gines Lopez.
