Mountaineer fatally injured on the Schreckhorn

A mountaineer fell on the Schreckhorn near Grindelwald on Sunday morning. It fell several hundred meters and was fatally injured. Her companion was salvaged unharmed.

The announcement that a mountaineer had crashed on the Schreckhorn was received on Sunday, July 19, 2020, shortly after 7.30 a.m. by the Bern cantonal police.

Thanks to Rega, which was called up immediately, and the Swiss Alpine Rescue Service, the woman was found several hundred meters below the crash site. However, it could only be recovered dead.

Under the direction of the Regional Public Prosecutor's Office in Oberland, an investigation was started to clarify the situation. According to initial knowledge, the woman was accompanied by another mountaineer on the climb to the Schreckhorn when she crashed for reasons to be clarified.

There are specific indications of the identity of the deceased mountaineer. Formal identification is still pending. The person accompanying the deceased was flown out to Grindelwald unharmed and was looked after by the Care Team of the Canton of Bern.
