50 years of Bergauf-Bergab | Popular TV format celebrates anniversary

There are probably few mountain sports enthusiasts in German-speaking countries who have never seen a show from the Bergauf-Bergab series. The format has now been on the air for 50 years, and Bayerischer Rundfunk is celebrating the anniversary with a new series.

To mark the anniversary, BR's current broadcast looks back on special moments that occurred in front of and behind the camera. Host Michael Düchs speaks with Ines Papert, Julius Kerscher, and mountain guides Manni Sturm and Bertl Schmidt. Michael Pause, who himself has accompanied the show for many years as a host and played a significant role in shaping it, also has his say.

The story of Uphill-Downhill

The program is one of the most established and oldest on Bavarian television, making it almost as much a part of Bavarian cultural heritage as The Blue Rider, Johann Pachelbel, or Pumuckl. The mountaineering magazine has maintained its permanent slot since 1975. Initially hosted by Hermann Magerer for many years, Michael Pause took over in 1998. The sports journalist (and son of the well-known climbing guide author Walter Pause) hosted the show for 20 years until passing the baton to his namesake, Michael Düchs, in 2018.

Since time immemorial, the magazine has reported on mountaineering personalities, their stories, experiences, successes, and failures. The spectrum ranges from mountain hiking, ski touring, and climbing to extreme expeditions. From the Alps to distant mountains, the Bergauf-Bergab team has explored all aspects of mountaineering.
