“DüDaDo in Nowhere” (8a+) – New Alpine multi-pitch route by Schild & Bacchetto

Jonas Schild and Anja Bacchetto have established a new alpine multi-pitch route on the Scheideggwetterhorn. "DüDaDo im Nirgendwo" (8a+) ascends the Epp Pillar in nine pitches. Schild achieved the first free ascent in September.

Three summers at the Epp pillar

They started Jonas shield and his partner Anja Bacchetto in the summer of 2024. They established the route from the bottom up, over three summers, through compact high-alpine limestone on the north face of the Scheideggwetterhorn. The route measures approximately 400 meters. The crux leads over a roof into a technically demanding slab – the suggested grade is 8a+.

In the summer of 2026, the project took on a second dimension: Schild and Bacchetto learned they were expecting children. Despite the advancing pregnancy, the two established the ninth and final pitch together in August. There wasn't enough time afterward for a joint ascent. In September, Schild returned and, spread over two days, free climbed all nine pitches.

[The route] is the result of three years of collaborative work, many days on this wall, and a time in which our own lives also changed.

An old photo as a starting point

Schild has known the wall since 2010. At 18, he achieved this with Nicolas Hojac The first repeat of "Into the Wild" (7b+, 450 m). Nicolas Zambetti and Deni Burdet had established the route a year earlier with companions. Schild free climbed all the pitches at that time. Years later, while preparing a presentation, he came across the old photos and discovered a compact limestone shell to the left of "Into the Wild". The rest is the story of this route.

The route's name comes from its remoteness. High above the Grosse Scheidegg, the Grindelwald bus signal is often the only sound from civilization. This "doo-doo" accompanies you from early morning until the last bus in the evening – right in the middle of nowhere.

Security in the Bernese Oberland style

The protection is sparse in places. Schild and Bacchetto compare it to modern alpine multi-pitch routes in the Bernese Oberland such as "La Svizzera", "Infinite Jest" or "Paciencia".

The route at a glance:

  • Area: Scheideggwetterhorn (3.360 m), north face, Epp pillar
  • Length: approx. 400 m, nine rope lengths
  • Difficulty: up to 8a+
  • Development: 2024–2026, Jonas Schild and Anja Bacchetto
  • Independent visit: Jonas Schild, September 2026
DüDaDo – the topo for repeat visitors:

The ratings are a suggestion. They need to be confirmed by the first repeaters. Until then, the "DüDaDo" from the valley remains the only commentary on the route.
