Far from being trashy: 5 climbing films that take themselves seriously

It's a familiar story: Hollywood productions often take liberties with the technical aspects of climbing and mountaineering. Of course, there are exceptions: We've compiled five climbing films that strive for realism.

who looking for cult-trashy climbing films Anyone who enjoys a good dose of explosions and absurdity will quickly find what they're looking for in classics like "Cliffhanger" (1993) or "Vertical Limit" (2000) (just think of Sylvester Stallone's legendary bolt-wielding pistol).

And even more recent productions like "The Ledge" or "Fall" (both 2022) show that stranded portaledges, unsecured knife fights and hair-raising free solos can still thrill a wide audience decades later. But are there actually any films that portray climbing and mountaineering reasonably well?

These are usually made by experts, which is why we haven't included documentaries in our top 5 list of fictional climbing films. US action thriller by and starring Clint Eastwood (Original: The Eiger SanctionAn art professor and former professional killer must identify and eliminate a Russian assassin for his final assignment on the infamous Eiger North Face. On the mountain, the spy thriller becomes an alpine challenge, and the wall itself becomes deadly terrain.

What climbing fans can expect

A spectacular backdrop of the Eiger North Face with a youthful Clint Eastwood as "James Bond on the mountain." Even though the climbing aspect isn't entirely realistic, the film takes itself quite seriously and was shot (sometimes under extremely adverse conditions) on location at the Eiger North Face and other locations in Switzerland.

  • Duration: 129 minutes
  • Directed by Clint Eastwood
  • Rating: 6,4/10 (IMDb)

An action-drama by Werner Herzog: Top climbers Roccia Innerkofler and Martin Sedlmayr (played by Stefan Glowacz!) each want to be the first to conquer the challenging Cerro Torre in Patagonia. Driven by ambition and competition, their race becomes an existential test of the relationship between man and nature. The film contains many parallels to the controversial first ascent of Cerro Torre in 1959 by Cesare Maestri and his partner Toni Egger, who died in an accident during the descent.

What climbing fans can expect

Authentic mountain and climbing scenes directed by Werner Herzog, a thrilling atmosphere, and a mountain drama. The competitive aspect of climbing is presented with a touch of realism – making Stefan Glowacz's first film role all the more impressive.

  • Duration: 105 min.
  • Directed by Werner Herzog
  • Rating: 6,2/10 (IMDb)

Fall into the Void (2003)

The successful summit turns into a nightmare for British mountaineers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates when they are caught in a blizzard on their descent. The film combines interviews with the protagonists from that time with reenacted scenes – so it is not a pure documentary.

What climbing fans can expect

An extremely gripping, realistic mountain drama focusing on endurance, risk, and the psychological strain of extreme expeditions. The landscape shots were filmed on Siula Grande in Patagonia, the close-ups in the French Alps. The film received numerous awards.

  • Duration: 106 minutes
  • Directed by: Kevin Macdonald

North Face (2008)

Rare German-language production: »North Face« (Image: IMDb)

A historical mountaineering drama "made in Germany": In the summer of 1936, the two mountaineers Toni Kurz and Andi Hinterstoisser, like many others, dream of conquering the still unclimbed Eiger North Face. But a sudden change in the weather, a medical emergency, and external pressure transform their ascent into a dramatic race for survival on the "Murder Wall." This German Film Award-winning drama also touches (albeit superficially) on the significance of mountaineering during the Nazi era.

What climbing fans can expect

Real locations, an authentic atmosphere, and a blend of adventure and climbing. Even though there are differences from the actual events of 1936, the filmmakers strove for realism by filming at many original locations. On the advice of Touching the voidDirector Kevin Macdonald filmed several scenes in a freezer warehouse.

  • Duration: 123 minutes
  • Directed by: Philipp Stölzl
  • Rating: 7,4/10 (IMDb)

Everest (2015)

Hollywood cast in »Everest« (Image: IMDb)

This biographical action film deals with the widely publicized Mount Everest tragedy of May 1996, in which eight climbers lost their lives. Several expedition teams are caught in an unexpectedly violent blizzard on their way to the summit of Everest, putting their lives at risk. The film explores the clash of various themes: ambition, the forces of nature, and human limitations, as well as the increasing tourism on Everest and the commercialization of mountaineering.

What climbing fans can expect

A grand mountain action-drama with breathtaking scenery, real-life references, and a stellar cast (including Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, Jason Clarke, and Josh Brolin). Scenes filmed on location in Nepal allow the film to present a neutral perspective on the risks and ethics of high-altitude mountaineering.

  • Duration: 122 minutes
  • Directed by Baltasar Kormákur
  • Rating: 7,1/10 (IMDb)

Our Conclusion

Even though these productions take mountain sports more seriously than many trash films – anyone expecting 100% realism will be disappointed by award-winning films. Documentary films How "The dawn wall"And the like are probably more fortunate. Nevertheless, these five film recommendations offer exciting representations of climbing and mountaineering on the big screen, where a bit of drama is, after all, part of the experience."
