Megos&Woods: climbing holds by Alex Megos

Three guys with a mission. Together with his friends Luis and Basti, Alexander Megos has now launched a collection of climbing holds. Under the name "Megos&Woods," the three have been selling climbing holds made from Franconian wood since September 02nd.

We are climbers, craftsmen, wood lovers, shapers, tinkerers, woodworkers, woodworms, buyers, grip testers, goofballs, three guys with one mission.

Handles made from regional wood

The Franconian climber Alex Megos is a self-proclaimed "wooden handle expert." Basti, known in the Franconian Jura region as "Pappa Woods," has been making his own handles from regional wood since 2020. He sells sets and individual pieces, as well as custom orders and now also volume orders.

I was familiar with Pappa Woods' wooden handles from Chris, and we'd already had sets from Basti at the Frankenjura Academy. When he suggested it would be cool to do something together, I immediately thought, 'Yes, you're right!'

The idea for the collaboration was born about half a year ago. Shortly after the idea, action followed: They considered which fingering styles they wanted to use and immediately produced samples, which became the first collection of »Megos&Woods« have led.

From the forest to the wall, from wood to the hand

Megos&Woods

The wood used by both Megos&Woods and Pappa Woods comes directly from Franconia. They affectionately call it "Heimatholz" (local wood) on their website. Sustainability is a very important topic for Megos, and he often talks about how to reduce one's carbon footprint and act more environmentally and climate-consciously. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the wood used to produce his handles is regional, with short transport routes and transparent origins.

In our handles we combine regionality, love of wood craftsmanship and passion for climbing.

We simply tried to find a good mix of shapes that offer something for everyone, whether beginner, advanced or professional

Alex's climbing style hasn't been influenced by the holds, but according to the wooden grip fan, the holds have influenced his style. The first collection consists of eleven different holds: one sloper/handle, five pinches, and five crimps.

The sloper/handle is made entirely of ash and can be ordered with an incut of 0°, 15°, 30° or 45°.

The pinches can be selected from various wood species, such as oak, maple, ash, cherry, elm, robinia, and heartwood beech, to name just a few. The incut angle can be selected between 0°, 15°, or 30°.

The variously sized crimps can also be ordered in various wood species, from maple and walnut to oak, cherry, ash, and beech. The crimp incut angle can be selected between 15° and 30°. The exception is the "Shield" crimp, which offers the full range of 0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°.

The wood options for the various handles depend on the wood available to the three. The options in the shop are adjusted depending on stock. Finally, you have to decide between untreated or painted handles.

The prices range between €15,50 and €25 per handle.
