On May 17, 2026, two Sherpas made history on the world's highest mountain: Kami Rita Sherpa stood on the summit of Mount Everest for the 32nd time, and Lhakpa Sherpa for the 11th time. Both thus surpassed their own world records on the roof of the world.

Nepal has issued 492 permits for climbers on Mount Everest this spring season – more than ever before. This is partly due to China's closure of the ascent route in Tibet. The Sherpas anticipate congestion on what is now the only remaining route.

Lhakpa Sherpa holds the world record for the most Everest ascents by a woman. "The most impressive Everest aspirant you've never heard of," is how she is described in the 2023 documentary "Mountain Queen," which followed her tenth Everest expedition. This year, the Sherpa woman will make her eleventh attempt on the world's highest mountain.

Just before the start of the season, operations on Mount Everest have come to a standstill. A serac approximately 30 meters high is blocking the normal route through the Khumbu Icefall, forcing the Icefall Doctors to halt their climb. Hundreds of climbers are already waiting at base camp for the all-clear.

Polish mountaineer Piotr Krzyżowski now officially holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest ascent of Lhotse and Everest without supplemental oxygen. He completed the climb in 1 day, 23 hours, and 22 minutes, beating the previous record by almost five days.

The rules of the game on the world's highest mountain could soon change. According to the planned "Tourism Bill 2081," future aspirants to climb Mount Everest will only receive a permit if they have previously successfully climbed a mountain in Nepal that is at least 7.000 meters high.

On January 7th, Nepalese mountaineer Hari Budha Magar made history. He became the first person with a double above-knee amputation to climb the "Seven Summits," the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.

Benjamin Zörer and Lukas Waldner have achieved the first ascent of Kimshung (6.781 m) in the Langtang Himal, Nepal. Together with François Cazzanelli and Giuseppe Vidoni, they climbed the new route "DESTINY" (TD, 1.300 m, 60°, AI4, M5) via the northeast face.
