Bed bugs are frequently spread from place to place – this also applies to the mountains. Alpine clubs offer practical tips on how hikers can prevent their spread between mountain huts.

Up to 40 percent of reservations at Alpine Club huts are being cancelled. Despite high occupancy rates during the summer season, this is causing organizational and financial problems for hut operators. The Austrian Alpine Club is therefore appealing for responsible booking practices and also recommends huts located off the main trails.

What the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV) and the Dutch Climbing and Mountaineering Association (NKBV) have set up this summer is a great win-win for both sides: For a week each, Dutch volunteers worked side by side with Austrian Alpine Club sections on the maintenance of alpine trails and experienced firsthand how much effort lies behind the supposedly self-evident nature of a marked hiking trail.

Together with Rother Bergverlag, the German Alpine Club has digitized more than 100 Alpine Club guides with a total of 45.000 pages. Probably the most famous reference works in the Eastern Alps are now available for download free of charge.

In 2020, 3471 people in the Swiss Alps and the Jura were in an emergency and had to be rescued or rescued by mountain rescue - more than in any previous year. 112 people had fatal accidents in classic mountain sports.
