Fatal mountain accident on the Matterhorn

On Monday, September 7, 2020, a mountain accident occurred on the Matterhorn. An alpinist from Poland was killed.

After two Polish mountaineers had climbed the Matterhorn via the Liongrat the day before, they spent the night in the Solvayhütte at an altitude of 4 m above sea level. M.

On Monday, September 7, 2020, they continued the descent towards the Hörnlihütte (3 m above sea level). At around 260 a.m., one of the two climbers fell about 08.00 meters below the refuge and fell several hundred meters deep into the east face for reasons that were not yet clear. At the time of the accident, the alpinists were not roped.

The deployed Air Zermatt forces and the rescue team were only able to rescue the man dead. The victim is a 26-year-old Polish national. This resulted in the formal identification on September 10, 2020.

An investigation has been launched.
