Ice climbing in South Africa? Yes that works!

Ice climbing legend Will Gadd has climbed the craziest ice formations around the world throughout his long career. He hadn't had South Africa on his radar so far. This changed suddenly when he saw Timothy Larsen swinging the ice axes in the Drakensberg Mountains.

The trip started with beach weather and ended with four new routes, two broken tents, baboons at the exits, a frozen toe and a great time with the most motivated ice climbers in the world.

Will Gadd

South Africa is probably not the first destination ice climbers think of when planning their next trip. This is what happened to the ice climbing professional Will Gadd. However, when he saw local climber Timothy Larsen climbing the steep ice in the Drakensberg Mountains, which are up to 3000 meters high, he knew where his next journey would take him.
