Everyday life can no longer be imagined without helicopter flights to the mountain huts of the major Alpine clubs. The hut guests appreciate the comfort and the balanced cuisine, so a lot of material has to be transported into the hut. The portable project questions this tendency and aims to reduce the number of helicopter flights.
More and more people are looking for a change from everyday life and relaxation in the mountains. Be it on a hike, mountaineering or climbing. In addition to the sporting aspect, people appreciate nature and the peace and quiet in the mountains.
If you stay for more than a day, you will often spend the night in one of the huts of an Alpine club. The best known are the SAC huts, but the Academic Alpine Club Bern, AACB for short, also operates three popular huts.
Like most other huts in the Alpine region, these huts are supplied by helicopter flights. Regular supply flights have so far been indispensable, especially in the high season, in order to meet the increasing demands of guests.
Project Portable: Bring your own food to the hut
This is where the Portable project comes in: It aims to encourage people to think about the increasing number of supply flights, to give food in the huts a different priority and to preserve the peace and quiet in the mountains.
Not so long ago, mountain hikers brought all of their food to the huts themselves. This state of affairs should not be returned to, after all, most hut visitors appreciate the good cooking and baking skills of the hut teams. The aim is that, in the long term, as many hut visitors as possible ask the hut in advance what is still needed, be able to obtain these goods in a depot and bring them with them according to the backpack capacity.
Carrying ceremony in the Bietschhornhütte
In the summer of 2021, the project will start with a festival in the Bietschhornhütte. On Saturday, July 3, 2021, as many goods as possible will be carried from Wiler in the Lötschtental to the Bietschhornhütte. The goal of this weekend is to save a helicopter flight, that is, to carry up about 700 kg of material (more is better). We estimate that we need at least 50 wearers for this. The same applies here: the more, the better! As a thank you, there is a supporting program in the hut and food and drink are available free of charge for those who wear them.
Information and program of the festival in the Bietschhornhütte
- Date: Saturday, 3. July 2021
- Starting point: "Wiler (Lötschen), Gschteinät" stop
- Purchase of goods for transport: 09.15 a.m. to 14.00 p.m.
- Ascent: 1 vertical meters, duration: 200 - 2.5 hours depending on fitness / load
- Participation is free
- You must bring your own food for the approach
- The hut has 25 beds (reservation required, free for helpers)
- There are other overnight accommodations in the valley. Departure on the same day is possible.
- On Monday, June 28th, 2021 a decision will be made based on the weather forecast whether the event will take place or not. Rain alone is no reason for a cancellation.
Registration for the AACB
Please register as soon as possible. The registration is binding. If you are still unable to come, we ask you to unsubscribe. Spontaneous helpers are also welcome. However, we depend on enough people to register in time. Because the event will only take place if there are enough registrations. We don't want the helicopter to have to fly with half a load after all. After registering, you will be informed about news and any changes by email.
Execution
The festival will also take place when it rains. If the weather makes it impossible to carry out the event safely, for example due to strong thunderstorms or the like, a decision will be made on Monday, June 28, 2021 whether the festival has to be canceled. All those who have registered will be informed of the decision by email and also on the homepage.
Protection concept
In principle, the rules of the BAG apply. A mask must be worn in particular where the minimum distance cannot be maintained.
