Coronavirus: Will the IFSC cancel its competitions in China?

The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) is concerned with the population of China affected by the coronavirus. For this reason, the IFSC sent 10 breathing masks to the Chinese Mountaineering Association (CMA) and encouraged its member associations to join the initiative. At the same time, the IFSC is questioning the competitions on Chinese soil.

The International Federation of Sport Climbing has launched an initiative to provide help and support to both the CMA and the entire sport climbing community in the People's Republic of China after the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). As a small gesture of support, the IFSC sent 10 breathing masks to the Chinese Mountaineering Association (CMA).

In lively exchange

The IFSC is in regular contact with the CMA and carefully monitors the reports of the World Health Organization (WHO). This is due to the international competitions Wujiang and Chongqing planned in April and the Asian Championships (also in Chongqing).

“First of all, we would like to express our best wishes to those affected by the coronavirus and to those who suffer directly or indirectly from the epidemic. At the same time, the health of our athletes and all the people who work for our member associations is very important to us. We all know that we have an obligation to the International Olympic Committee and our Asian Council. We will ensure that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification system is followed. At the same time, however, we will also avoid any health risk. "

Marco Scolaris, President of the IFSC

In its media release, the IFSC writes that the competitions may be postponed or even canceled. On February 11, 2020, the IFSC Executive Board will discuss how to proceed.
