GRIGRI+ 2026: Petzl updates its classic

More than 30 years ago, Petzl launched the GRIGRI, the first belay device with cam-assisted locking. Since then, it has been a staple in the climbing scene, both indoors and outdoors. In 2026, the GRIGRI+ is getting a significant update!

GRIGRI + now even easier and safer

In 1991, Petzl launched the GRIGRI, the first belay device with assisted locking via cams, revolutionizing belaying. Over the years, it has been continuously developed, and the product family has grown: first with the GRIGRI+, and most recently with the NEOX. Now, the GRIGRI+ is getting a major relaunch. This assisted locking device is designed for lead climbing and top-roping – both indoors and outdoors – and works with single ropes from 8,5 to 11 mm.

The GRIGRI+ returns in 2026 in a revised version. Petzl has further developed the device in several areas, and the result is impressive. The target group is intentionally broad: The GRIGRI+ works for everyone from beginners to experienced climbers. What makes it particularly special are two features: The Anti-panic lever It intervenes if the belayer pulls too hard while lowering, thus preventing uncontrolled rope run-through – an important feature, especially during the learning phase. ASSIST+ mode In turn, it assists with top-rope belaying by making it easier to pull in the rope.

What updates has the GRIGRI+ received?

1. The Anti-panic function The new model consists of only two stages: In stage 1, the belayer lowers their partner normally. Pulling the lever back blocks the descent (stage 2). The previous GRIGRI+ model had a third stage that allowed for descents in specific situations. This stage has been removed from the new model.

2. Top-rope belayingThe ASSIST+ mode activates the locking mechanism of the cam in advance – this facilitates rope retrieval in top-rope climbing and minimizes the risk of rope slippage if the brake rope is unintentionally released. This is made possible by two springs in the locking mechanism: The second spring tension ensures that no rope can be paid out in top-rope mode, as the device locks immediately. Switching between modes is generally not possible with rope inserted. Additional pictograms have also been added to help beginners correctly insert the rope.

3. At the new GRIGRI+ All plastic components – including the lever – are made from 100% recycled polyamide. The side panel has also been changed from stainless steel to high-strength aluminum, which makes the device more affordable.

The Petzl product family including the GRIGRI+

Petzl currently offers three belay devices with assisted locking, which differ in their focus:

  • The NEOX (approx. 235 g) is designed for lead climbing. An integrated wheel ensures smooth rope feed and facilitates quick rope payout – an advantage for active climbing both indoors and outdoors.
  • The GRIGRI (approx. 175 g) is the versatile all-round device for lead climbing and top-rope climbing, compact and lightweight.
  • The GRIGRI+ (approx. 200 g) focuses on top-rope belaying and offers additional support with an anti-panic lever and ASSIST+ mode. This makes it a great device for beginners as well as advanced users.

All three devices follow the same operating logic, so switching between them works without much getting used to.

What distinguishes the GRIGRI+ from the GRIGRI

The classic GRIGRI, at approximately 175 grams, is the lightest of the three current Petzl devices and is designed for everyday use in lead climbing and top-rope belaying. The GRIGRI+ weighs approximately 200 grams and is geared more towards top-rope climbing and those just learning to belay. Two features make the key difference:

Anti-panic lever: If the belayer pulls too hard on the lever during lowering, the anti-panic function automatically stops the rope from running through the rope. This provides greater safety, especially for beginners, when learning controlled lowering techniques.

ASSIST+ mode: When belaying on top rope, the rope must be continuously taken in. The ASSIST+ mode activates the cam lock early, which makes taking in the rope easier and reduces the risk of unintentional rope slippage.

Who is GRIGRI+ relevant for?

The GRIGRI+ is primarily aimed at two groups: climbers who are just learning to belay and will benefit from the anti-panic function and ASSIST+ mode, and regular top-rope belayers who spend a lot of time in the climbing gym and appreciate less effort and more control when lowering. The engraved markings on the device also make it easier to thread the rope correctly, a useful detail for those who are not yet familiar with the device. However, those who mainly lead climb and don't have a specific need for an anti-panic function are generally better served by the classic GRIGRI or the NEOX.
