After a stormy World Cup in Prague, where the women's final was canceled at short notice due to severe weather warnings, the indoor venue at the Bouldering World Cup in Bern this weekend offers a welcome change.
For the penultimate time this season, a Bouldering World Cup is coming up: This weekend the scene meets in Bern, where for the first time since the IFSC A climbing event will be held at the 2023 World Championships.
Weather and other turbulence in Prague
Last weekend's Bouldering World Cup in Prague ended turbulently: On Sunday evening, the women's final had to be canceled at short notice due to severe weather warnings - so the podium was decided by the results of the semi-finals. Oriane Bertone won gold in Prague for the second time in a row, followed by compatriot Agathe Calliet and Melody Sekikawa from Japan.
To be honest, I didn't want to win like that - I would have preferred to climb as well as I could in the final.
Oriane Bertone
For Japan's favorites Sorato Anraku, who had dominated all Bouldering World Cups of the season so far, Prague also had a surprise in store: The 18-year-old only topped three of four boulders in the final and was narrowly defeated by Mejdi Schalck who won his first and long-awaited World Cup gold there.
A legend says goodbye
Adam Ondra missed the finals at his last Bouldering World Cup in Prague, finishing in 15th place. The 32-year-old said goodbye to competitive bouldering in front of his home crowd – but the exceptional climber from the Czech Republic will remain with us in Lead World Cups for the time being.
Prague has already been announced as a World Cup venue for bouldering and lead for the 2026 season.
Life goes on and I am very excited to see where competitive bouldering will go.
