No top position and still qualified for the Olympics: Anouck Jaubert and Michael Piccolruaz

The French Anouck Jaubert and the Italian Michael Piccolruaz have qualified for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Thanks to the so-called Tripartite Commission Quota, their place at the summer games was preserved.

The IFSC regulations for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo contains a so-called tripartite commission quota for the award of two Olympic tickets. The idea behind this quota is to give athletes small or disadvantaged climbing nations a place. The Tripartite Commission Quota tickets were awarded to the Combined World Championships at Hachioji planned.

The only tripartite candidate misses his chance: Zàhéér Ahmád

However, only one athlete who met the criteria of the Tripartite Ticket took part in the Combined World Championships 2019: Zàhéér Ahmád from Pakistan. However, he made the mistake of not competing in the lead discipline, which is why he was denied the Olympic ticket.

This led to critical voices accusing the IFSC of having better informed Zàhéér Ahmád about the conditions of the Tripartite ticket. Long story short, the IFSC had to use other candidates to award the Tripartite tickets.

Unexpected luck for Anouck Jaubert and Michael Piccolruaz

The French woman can now enjoy the Tripartite ticket Anouck Jaubert and the Italian Michael Piccolruz. They took 2019th and 11th place in the combined format at the 14 Combined World Championships. The last eight Olympic tickets will be awarded in the following competitions.

  • IFSC European Championships in Moscow (RUS), October 1-8, 2020
  • IFSC African Championships in Cape Town (RSA), date still open
  • IFSC Asian Championships, location and date still open
  • IFSC Oceania Championships in Sydney (AUS), date still open

Unexpected bad luck for Stefano Ghisolfi and Fanny Gibert

In the spirit of "One man's joy, another's pain", the decision of the IFSC with regard to the Tripartite Ticket resulted in Italy (for men) and France (for men and women) using their Olympic quota.

This again means that the two Olympic candidates Stefano Ghisolfi (Italy) and Fanny Gibert (France) have no chance of participating in the Olympic Games. Even a victory at the upcoming European Championships in Moscow would not change anything in the award.
