The world-class alpinists Stephan Siegrist and Thomas and Alexander Huber want to create a memorial to their unfortunate climbing friends with a new route on the north face of the Eiger. Bergwelten accompanied the three alpinists in their endeavor and turned it into a documentary that you shouldn't miss.

Along their way through the wall, the three reflect on their memories of all the great climbers and friends who are no longer with them, but who celebrated some of their greatest triumphs here on the legendary north face, such as solo speed record holder Ueli Steck or ice climbing pioneer Jeff Lion.
The three's first ascent sets the stage for memories of the passion of their companions and the great tragedies that have already taken place on the infamous wall.

A new route for deceased friends
They want to dedicate their spectacular new route on the Eiger to these friends, as Thomas explains: “We wanted to call this route “In Memoriam” and climb it in memory of Julian Zanker, who actually should have accompanied us here. When David Lama died that same year, it was clear to me that we would dedicate this route to all our friends who, like us, were on the north face of the Eiger and who are no longer with us today.
The north wall shows its rough side
Stefan Siegrist, who is one of the most experienced climbers on the Eiger north face with over 40 climbs, once came dangerously close to falling on the route The Young Spider. And the north face of the Eiger is still full of unexpected obstacles and challenges.
We ourselves have to be careful that the route does not become our own monument.
Thomas huber
Spindrifts - fine freezing rain that makes climbing extremely difficult - falling rocks and ice, as well as bare slabs freed from ice, push the three climbers to their limits again and again. After several attempts, it became clear to Thomas Huber: “The route is called Memorial. This is a monument."
