How does the combined format work in sport climbing? What are the rules

The competition at Olympic Combined (combined format) runs over two rounds: qualification and final, which take place on different days. Every athlete has to start in all three disciplines. The sequence is fixed: It starts with speed, then comes bouldering and the last discipline is lead.

The results from the qualifying round are multiplied and a ranking is created from them. The eight athletes with the lowest number of points will compete against each other in the final. In the final, the three disciplines are climbed one after the other with a short break.

The Olympic Combined format explained in detail

Where do the sport climbing competitions take place?

The sport climbing competitions take place in the Japanese capital Tokyo, more precisely, in the Aomi Urban Sports Park. The covered competition walls, three in total, were built on a huge asphalt surface.
